The other night I got to talking with a good friend about how fake the cover of magazines are these days. All these edited images making these girls “perfect”. All these celebrities and millionaires showing off their wealth and success. We both agreed it would be cool if someday the tables would turn. That they would stop editing these pictures to be perfect. And we would accept our flaws and embrace the stories of the average Joe in America.
After venting our ideas for a minute it made sense though. Magazines wouldn’t sell if they weren’t pushing this fairy tale we as Americans still want to believe in. It makes the light at the end of our 9 to 5 tunnel much brighter if we are working towards that “perfect image” on the cover of this weeks you name it.
I went to a funeral this morning of a man in my family I have met a hand full of times. I don’t remember much about him other than his awesome smile and welcoming heart. As hundreds and hundreds and hundreds of people filled the church to mourn his death and celebrate his life I couldn’t help but notice a few things. I couldn’t help but notice that no one mentioned anything about his good looks. No one mentioned what his pay check was like. No one mentioned what house he lived in or what car he drove. Rather everyone told a story of the lasting impression he made on the community around him. It was obvious that he was a very selfless man and cared most about making others feel loved and cared for.
He had a passion for life and passion for people. He understood that the cover of the magazine was a fairy tale story and wasn’t worth grasping for. Instead he created his own story and wrote it on the hearts of everyone that came to his service today. He will be missed but,
His Love
His Compassion
His Smile
His Story
Will forever live on in the hearts of a community that he helped create.
I think thats what Jesus was talking about when he calls us to live a life set apart from the world. Fairy tales are fun but life is real. Lets.Stop.Buying.Magazines
